TO ALL THE MEMBERS OF THE TERESIAN CARMELITE FAMILY

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

On the 9th of August this year, the 60th anniversary of the death of St Teresa Benedicta of the Cross (Edith Stein) will be celebrated in Auschwitz. This celebration is organized conjointly by the Krakow Archdiocese, the Bielsko-Zywiec diocese and the Discalced Carmelite friars of the Krakow Province.

Among those invited to this celebration are: Cardinal Lustiger (Paris), Cardinal Meisner (Cologne), Cardinal Wetter (Munich) Cardinal Gulbinowicz (Breslau) and other Polish and German Bishops.

The celebration includes a Mass in the Carmelite nuns' monastery in Auschwitz and ecumenical prayer in the Birkenau camp.

Through this letter I would like to invite all of you, particularly our contemplative Carmelite Nuns, to join together in prayer on this day. One special intention should be to ask the Lord, through the intercession of Edith Stein, daughter of the people of Israel , for peace in the Holy Land, still tormented by strife, hate and division.

May our prayer take on, in the 60th anniversary of the death of St Teresa Benedict of the Cross, an ecumenical dimension helping religions to be a source of peace and reconciliation in the world.

I take this occasion to wish all of you on 16th July, solemnity of Our Lady, Mother of Carmel, a day filled with the presence of her who is our Mother, sister and model.

Fraternally in Carmel,

Fr Camilo Maccise, O.C.D.Superior General
